Silver Star Ltd. manufactures four products, namely X, Y, Z, and W using the same plant and process. The following information relates to a production period: Product X Y Z W Output in units 800 650 500 550 Cost per unit (₹) — Direct Material 50 55 45 60 — Direct Labour 12 10 8 9 Machine hours/unit 5 hrs. 3.5 hrs. 2.5 hrs. 1.5 hrs. The four products are similar and are usually produced in production runs of 25 units and sold in batches of 10 units. Machine hour rate is currently used to absorb production overheads. The total overheads incurred by the company for the period are as follows: Overhead Category Amount (₹) Machine operation and maintenance cost 75,000 Setup costs 25,000 Store receiving 18,000 Inspection 12,000 Material handling and dispatch 3,500 During the period the following cost drivers are to be used for the overhead costs: Activity Cost Driver Setup cost Number of production runs Store receiving Requisitions raised Inspection Number of production runs Material handling and dispatch Orders executed It is also determined that: Machine operation and maintenance cost should be apportioned between setup cost, store receiving, and inspection activity in 5:3:2. Number of requisitions raised on store is 60 for each product, and the number of orders executed is 220, each order being for a batch of 10 units of a product. Required: (i) CALCULATE the total cost of each product, if all overhead costs are absorbed on a machine hour rate basis. (ii) CALCULATE the total cost of each product using activity-based costing. (iii) COMMENT briefly on the differences disclosed between overhead allocated by the present system and overhead traced under activity-based costing.

Under ABC, products X and Y show lower unit costs compared with the machine-hour method (so they were over costed by the traditional method), while products Z and W show higher unit costs (they were under costed by the traditional method). This change can materially affect pricing and product-level profitability — especially for Z and W where ABC raises unit cost significantly.
