In the following independent cases, state whether the assessee is required to file an Income Tax Return for Assessment Year 2026-27. Give reasons in support of your answer. (i) Mr. Dhruv, aged 62 years, having interest from fixed deposits amounting to 2,70,000. The TDS deducted on his fixed deposit interest by the bank amounts to 26,000. No other tax was deducted or collected at source. He also made a cash deposit of 10,00,000 in his savings bank account, but the total deposits in his savings bank account (including the cash deposit and other credits) aggregated to 48,00,000. (assuming he has opted out of default tax regime). (ii) Dr. Nirav (aged 50 years) is a renowned heart surgeon practicing as a sole proprietor. His gross receipts from the medical profession during the year were - 10,50,000. After deducting allowable business expenditure of 8,10,000, his net profit is 2,40,000. During the year, he has earned - 10,000 as an interest from saving bank a/c. (assuming he has opted for default tax regime).

Suggested Answer and Working Notes:

(i) Not required to file his return of income: Mr. Dhruv's total income does not exceed - 3,00,000, being the basic exemption limit for senior citizen as per optional tax regime. In the present case, since Mr. Dhruv, a senior citizen has a TDS credit of 26,000, which does not exceed the threshold limit of 50,000 and deposit in saving account in aggregate of 48lakhs which does not exceed the threshold limit of 50lakhs, he is not required to file his return of income. (ii) Required to file his return of income: In this case, since Dr. Nirav's gross receipts from medical profession was - 10,50,000 for the P.Y. 2025-26, which is in excess of 10lakhs, hence, he is required to file his return of income though his total income is 2,50,000 which does not exceed - 4,00,000, being the basic exemption limit as per default tax regime.
